About Dave O’ Brien

Dave has run over 500 races – including more than 40 marathons and 6 desert marathons, appeared on 2 TV survival shows and climbed the seven highest peaks in Ireland in only 23 hours 28 minutes – a record that still stands to this day.

In December 2010 Dave returned from Antarctica where he completed the last of the 4 x 250km endurance races as part of ‘Racing the Planet, 4 Deserts Series’.  Earlier that year he had completed the other 3 races in the Gobi, Atacama and Sahara deserts.  Dave is the only Irishman ever and, at 56 years of age, the oldest man on the planet to have completed the ‘four deserts series’ across the hottest, coldest, driest and windiest deserts in the world, carrying everything on his back to survive.  He achieved this remarkable feat in just 38 weeks.

The film Desert Runners premiered at the Edinburgh International Film Festival in 2013, documenting the amateur runners who take on this challenge and heavily features Dave O’Brien.
