Stepping out of your comfort zone is something that everyone should do once in a while. It is only when we step into the unknown that we realise what we are really capable of and how enjoyable things that we might deem impossible can be. There is no better way to prove this than by taking on a Quest Adventure Race. Offering something for all levels of fitness and ability, from total novice to experienced athletes, the Quest Adventure Series is sure to test your mettle. Here are five things you will find out about yourself as you push your limits all the way to the finish line.

  1. You get out of things what you put into them.

When you get to the start line of a race, you have either trained enough or you haven’t. The more work you have put in, the more likely you are to enjoy the race. And this fact is pretty true for life too. The more you put into something, the greater the reward and feeling of satisfaction when you reach the finish line.

  1. Your body is capable of a lot more than you give it credit for.

The body is an amazing thing and it is only when you really push yourself that you find out what it is really capable of. It will run, cycle, swim, kayak – you name it – a lot further and harder than you ever thought physically possible.

When you first sign up to a Quest event you might think that the shortest Challenge option seems out of reach. However, you will surprise yourself when you reach the finish line and discover that your body is capable of a lot more than you gave it credit for. Next you will be signing up for the Sport distance and before you know it you will be taking to the Expert start line. Just take bite sized chunks and you will be surprised at how quickly you will be able to progress to longer and harder races.

In the wise words of Winnie the Pooh author A.A. Milne, “You’re braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”

  1. The simple things seem so much more enjoyable.

Whether is a piping hot cup of tea, an ice-cold can of Coke or a dry change of clothes, the simple things that we often take for granted in everyday life can seem game-changing when you reach the finish line of a tough race. Nothing ever beats a good feed and warm bed after a tough event in bad weather. It is the best feeling in the world!

  1. Good gear is crucial.

Your gear will make or break your race. A leaky waterproof jacket or ill-fitting pair of shoes can make the journey to a finish line torture or even totally impossible. Spend time researching your gear choices and be sure to test everything prior to race day!

  1. Learn to be proud of your journey.

Whether you win the Expert category or are last across the line in the Challenge distance event, your feeling of satisfaction should not be any less. It is all about the journey. You should be proud of yourself for stepping out of your comfort zone and signing up for a race to begin with. And if you manage to train, even just a little bit, and reach the finish line, you deserve a big old bualadh bos. It’s important not to play down your achievements but celebrate them instead as that is what will motivate you and give you the confidence to take on your next challenge whatever that may be!
